Final day thoughts from a Fireflies Rider
I woke up early on the last day of the ride after a recurring dream, well more like a recurring image, there were a line of our bikes leaning up against a steep grass verge, I walked slowly towards them and then as I got close I was suddenly back at the point where I started. This seemed to go on all night long, I couldn't sleep, and I couldn't work out where this image had come from. Then it dawned on me where it had come from, it was what I had seen as I walked away from Luke after he had fallen so badly and was lying on the deck his face covered in blood. As I prised open this scene it got me thinking about some of the other incidents from the ride, and this collection of images seemed to encapsulate what the ride was all about for me. I could see the bravery on Tracy's face as she grapple with and controlled her fear of descending the steep unpredictable mountain passes, Adrian and Graham dropping to the back of the group to help others through a tough stage, Chris selflessly organizing tables, drying clothes, ordering food, route finding, always putting others before himself, the courage John showed as he hauled himself up the steep face of Col de Turini at the end of a long, hot day, the disappointment in Emma's eyes as she realised that her knee wouldn't take anymore that day, the exhausted and suffering faces of everyone as they gave everything to get to the top of another Col, and back to Luke, broken bruised, battered and whaling like a bastard, yet still making light of things to ease the concerns of those around him. These qualities epitomized the ride, the selflessness, concern, fear, determination, and bravery exhibited, seemed to me to relate to the suffering of those for whom we ride, through it we might of experienced a small part of their fight and this made the ride all the more relevant for me. The ride really does put us all in a place where we have to grit our teeth and hang on in there, where we have to fight to survive. It has taught me a lot about myself and I feel really proud to have played a small part in it. So from me to you fireflies old and new thank you and may you always burn so brightly. Michael x

The Fireflies' arrival into Cannes has generated great support from the advertising industry and culminates with a hero's welcome at the Palais des Festivals.
